This was the decisive front where the main operations

of the KWANGTUNG Troops took pl800, As soon as a conflict with

KWANGHSI appeared probable CHEN CHIUNG MING (1) began concentrat-

ing his forces in and around HSIN HUNG (18) where Headquarters

were established. WEI PONG PING (19) was in charge and his 3rd

Division were sent from CANTON on his left by the 4th and 5th

Independent Brigades and on his right in KVANG NING the 7th and

8th Independent Brigades. A large force of gunboats and trans-

porte was collected, and a few aeroplanes were sent from Canton.

When the order to advance was received WEI advanced up

the river with the 3rd Division supported by the 4th Independent

Brigade. A certain amount of opposition was encountered from

the ports, but was quickly overcome, and finally when YUNG YUEN

was captured by HUNG LEUKS (20) and the rear of WUCHOW (5) was

threatened the city was surrendered, CHAN PING KUN (4) fled and

the troops retreated to T'ANG YUEN.

Cantonese Headquarters were set up at WUCHOW (5) and

CHÊN CHTUNG MING (1) himself proceeded there and began organizing

the civil administration.

The 3rd Division and gunboats pursued the retreating

KWANGHOI Forces, and a very fine engagement took place for the

possession of T'ANG YUẦN which was captured after heavy losse

on both sides, The KWANGHSI troops retreated to PING NAM closely

pursued by the victorious Cantonese and PING NAM (21) fell on the

14th July.

The retreat of the KWANGHSI Troops now became more

rapid, and the Cantonese entered SHECHOW (22) on the 17th. They

had expected a resistance here, but none was met, and the

Cantonese proceeded to NANNING which was invested on July 25th.

(d) NORTH RIVER FRONT,

The KWANGESI Commander was SHE HUNG YUNG (23) with

the 3rd Division KWANGHSI Luchun, with Headquarters at HOYUEN (24),
